In 1990, the restaurant partnered with the U.S. Department of Commerce to develop a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) program and establish a pioneering standard for freshness and food safety in the fishing industry.  I also wonder if the republication of their menu is questionable. There have already been legal disputes over menus. One Adam has even posted in the last six months or so. Although DoorDash eventually relented and removed Legal from its Boston websites and apps, Legal is asking a judge to permanently prohibit DoorDash from listing Legal as a restaurant option again. It is also seeking damages – doubled or tripled – and legal fees. For many years, George Berkowitz sold fresh fish and fish and chips to take away from his humble establishment. His son Roger, who became president and CEO of the company in 1992, worked in the market as a teenager. He recalled that «fish was not so popular in the 50s and 60s for much of the 50s and 60s.» Roger recalled that when Pope Paul VI allowed Catholics to eat meat on Fridays in the early 1960s, his father took an insurance course to prepare for a possible career change.
The company`s current headquarters are located in the South Boston Seaport District, and as of 2022, the group operates 24 restaurants in five states, most of them in the greater Boston area.   The restaurant serves more than 7 million customers each year with an average size of 6,000 square feet (560 m2).  Legal Sea Foods also operates an online fish market and ships fresh fish to neighbouring U.S. as well as a retail division. On that day in 1980, a fire destroyed Legal Sea Foods` original fish market and restaurant in Cambridge. The restaurant reopened, but the business quickly expanded outside the neighborhood. Today, there are 30 Family Legal Sea Foods restaurants. All of them have the same inappropriate name, which goes back to the company`s roots. In 1904, Harry Berkowitz named his store Inman Square Legal Cash Market because his customers could exchange government-issued legal stamps there. When his son turned to fish, he kept the name «legal».
Now, his grandson runs the business from a 75,000-square-foot headquarters overlooking Boston Harbor. On the roof is a 45-foot-long stainless steel sculpture of a New England cod. During the 2016 presidential primary, Legal Sea Foods launched a parody on the campaign theme. On Super Tuesday, Roger Berkowitz declared himself a candidate for president of the United States in a parody advertising campaign of the «shady» election. Among other things, he promised he would legalize seaweed on his first day in office, and he urged voters to #feeltheberk on social media.  The spots were broadcast in newspapers, radio and print media.  The «Welcome to Legal» campaign was launched in 2019 with ads alluding to the legality of marijuana in Massachusetts. The campaign received national attention, with comments from posts such as AdWeek and AdAge.   Legal Sea Foods` long-standing slogan is: «If it`s not fresh, it`s not legal!»  While the company capitalized on its unusual nickname with the motto «If it`s not fresh, it`s not legal!», the origin of the name predates the family`s fish business by nearly half a century.
Menus vary by location, season, and concept, but they all include a wide variety of seafood appetizers, appetizers, salads, and desserts. More than 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish, prepared according to New England tradition, are available throughout the year. Some of the most popular products are: lobster, clam chowder, fried clams, crab cake, shrimp cocktail, tuna burgers, baked scrod, surf and grass and grilled fish fillets. Extensive wine lists and full-service bars are also available at all locations and have been recognized for their philosophy of providing value across all price ranges. The restaurant offers separate menus for lunch and dinner, as well as gluten-free and children`s menus. By directly purchasing fishing activities by day boat, the company presents itself as the freshest fish. The company has also made industry progress in fish management, working with federal authorities to develop Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).  The Legal Sea Foods brand was born in 1950 when the Berkowitz family opened a fish market in the Inman Square neighborhood of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
